Hi! I'm Dave Mercer. I've authored many popular computer books (you can find me on Amazon - look for Dave Mercer in the Books section), and I've authored several popular training CDs for the Virtual Training Company (use the Advanced Search). I've also been a professional trainer on Computer and Internet subjects in the San Diego area.
If you'll give me a few minutes of your time, I'll tell you how adding audio to your site can help you:
Communicate to more people, more effectively
Make your site stand out from the crowd
Capture more sales
And our Website Audio Production is affordable. We have Web Page Narration packages that can be created and applied to your site in under a week, starting as low as $75 a page for 10 pages with no hosting fees or other recurring costs. It's worth finding out about!
The Audio Difference
Unless you're selling say, milk by the gallon, it's likely that consumers need to find out more about what you offer and why it's better coming from you. From cars to construction to cosmetic surgery, consumers have lots of questions that need to be answered before they make up their minds.
So most Websites have long pages of text detailing the technical information about their products and services, and attempting to answer questions thoroughly, in the hope that consumers will read and understand the material. But we all know that many consumers shudder when they see lots of text, and skip on to the next Website.
Audio to the rescue! Imagine the difference audio can make. A small icon that, when clicked, reads the material to the consumer in a reassuring voice. Here are just a few of the benefits:
Just click and listen - no reading necessary
Download the MP3, play it back later on your MP3 player
Email it to your friends
Replay it as much as you want
Audio Helps Communicate to More People, More Effectively
If you've ever studied marketing (or been in business) you know that consumers are fickle. The process of gathering enough information to make a purchase or just call your business is not as simple as adding up the pros and cons. A consumer's emotional impression of you and your business can make a huge difference. Audio helps you make the right impression from the very start, and here's why:
They hear a reassuring voice, and appropriate music and sound effects in the background
They hear testimonials in story form from satisfied customers
They internalize the right impression, without even realizing it
Audio on your Website adds a dimension of communication that plain text can't. It's the closest you can get to talking to them yourself face-to-face!
Audio Makes Your Website Stand Out
As you've probably noticed, most sites (including your competitors) do not have audio on their Websites. But the growing influence of audio is all around us, and there's no question it's an important medium whose importance will only grow. Here's a few examples of audio changing the Internet:
Google now promotes Audio Ads
Vast numbers of consumers have IPods and MP3 players
All new computer systems come with speakers, standard
Cell phones now commonly access the Web
Adding audio will make your site stand out, convey the impression that you're comfotable with the latest technology, and give consumers another reason to do business with you instead of someone behind the times.
Audio Helps You Capture More Sales
There are two primary purposes for business websites: lead the consumer to contact you directly, and lead the consumer to make an online purchase or schedule an appointment.
But it's one thing to make the decision to move forward - it's an entirely different prospect when dealing with shopping carts, scheduling systems, and other interactive online features. It's so common for consumers to abandon shopping carts that there is an entire field of Web Design devoted to making shopping carts easier to use.
Enter Audio! A small Help icon with audio attached, placed strategically in the shopping cart, scheduling system, or on the Contact or RFP form, can give consumers the answers they need to proceed with their purchase with confidence. Audio can make the difference!

Audio on Website Examples
There are several audio formats that work well on Websites, and in these paragraphs you'll see them in action, and we'll explain how they work. First, let's start with a basic example of Flash audio. Click the speaker icon on the left to hear the next paragraph:
Sound is Good! Most people now have speakers on their computer, and if your site doesn't have audio you're missing another opportunity to communicate. Professionally recorded audio versions of each page on your site can now be obtained for as little as $75 each. At that price, why not!
One of the best formats for Audio on the Web is MP3 - it's used in the Flash audio of the previous example. But let's say you want users to be able to download the audio for playback later. You could give them access to the MP3 files, so they could right-click their mouse to download. Try right-clicking the link on the left and you'll see what we mean.

Audio Navigation and Help
The reason most Web audio is made in Flash is programmability. With Flash, your users can not only hear the audio, they can use their keyboard or mouse to change what happens, what they hear, what pages they go to, and so on. Flash audio is programmable, unlike plain MP3 audio, and let's you do so much more. Click the icon on the left for an example of navigating a site with audio.

Audio in Spanish and Other Languages
Want to appeal to the immense Hispanic market in this country and around the world? Add audio translated into Spanish to your Website. A big bonus: we provide the translated text as well as the audio, so you get Spanish-language Web pages as well as the audio. It doesn't cost much extra, but broadens the appeal of your site tremendously! Click the icon for an example.

Option
Flash with MP3 Download
Want to use Flash for the programmability, but still allow consumers to download the MP3? It's easy to do, and gives consumers the best of both worlds. Plus there's no extra cost involved. Click to give it a try.
Want more than just Web page narration? Our audio production experts can create audio (and video) productions with the highest quality, comparable to the best national radio and TV commercials. Obviously it's more expensive, but it can have an enormous impact in the right settings. Click the icon on the left for a few examples of top-of-the-line audio production, or download the MP3 for more examples.
Choose your Level of Interactivity. Would you like your audio to do more than just allow your clients to navigate your website? We can program your audio to ask questions, respond correctly to answers (typed in), and help your users not just navigate your Website but buy products, receive customer service and tech support, and learn about new products.
MP3 EBooks and Audio Presentations - Industry Examples. Most of our examples use Flash to take advantage of programmable functionality. We also make pure MP3 files for selected audio applications, such as EBooks and Audio Presentations. These are particularly well-suited for situations where the user may want to download and save the audio.
Costs and Timeframes - Web Page Narration/Audio Navigation
So you've decided to give the basic Web page Narration and Audio Navigation a try? Here's what you get, what it costs, and how long it takes:
What you get. For this package, there's a 4 page minimum, and you get one Flash audio file per page, plus the audio navigation functionality. Each page is professionally narrated (with several voices to choose from), and subtle background music/effects are added for quality. You get the Flash files, the MP3 files, and the code to insert them in the your Website.
How does the project get done? We go to your Website and record an audio version of each page (not all pages need to have an audio version recorded - you tell us which pages to record). Then we convert the recording to a small file that is added to your Website and will play back on any Flash-equipped browser (the vast majority of browsers can play Flash, so no problems there).
We also record an audio navigation file, so users can browse your site by hitting numbers on the keyboard instead of searching the menu. The audio navigation sounds just like a voice menu on the telephone, and makes it very easy to find what you want without trouble. It's a great complement to your Website.
We send you the files, the HTML code, and simple instructions for adding the audio to your existing Web pages. Your own Webmaster will be able to get the job done in less than 15 minutes, or we can do it for you for $175 for standard HTML (and ask about our FREE installation special currently running). Either way, it's a simple and quick process.
What does it cost? There is a 4 page minimum, and between 4 and 10 pages is from $525 to $775. Beyond 10 pages it's $75 per page. A single page is one screen of text or 3 paragraphs of text or approximately 600 words. If you'd like us to say something other than what is written on the page, you can add a sentence or two before or after the main text of the page at no additional cost.
How Long Does it Take? We can usually get an entire Website done in a week or less, depending on the complexity of the job. For audio based on existing Website content, you won't need to get involved at all, so there's no pressure on you or your staff. You just order, and a week later it's ready!

“I've been working with Servata Online Applications (directly with Dave Mercer), for several years now... He is very responsive to timely change requests and creatively gets the work done, and secondly, his fees are very reasonable. ... I can reach him day or night, weekdays and weekends, which is important to me and my clients when a new idea or concern pops up... It's like having a great employee and a full IT department on your team, without the overhead or complications of hiring people. I'd recommend Servata to those interested in making serious additional revenues for their business.”
